March Madlantis

2020-02-29 16:20

As was done last year we plan to run an individual player bracket elimination launch tournament during the March Atlantis, called March Madlantis.

Day 1 is the seeding round. Here the top 81 launchers from each faction will be ranked by launches and given a seed # (1-81 where lower seed numbers are higher launchers and give a better position in the tournament). This will be used to populate players into the tournament bracket.

Day 2 starts the elimination bracket. Other than providing for the initial seeding day 1 launch count no longer matters, each player will be scored for this round by their day 2 launch totals. The structure of the bracket is a head to head to head face-off between one player from each faction, called a “match”, and a collection of three such matches with a total of 9 players, 3 from each faction, called a “group”. The highest scoring player for the round from each faction within the group will advance to the next round.

Scoring points: points are earned both by a players performance (rank) within the match as well as within the group. Being the top launcher in the match earns the player 3 points, being the 2nd ranked within a match earns 1 point, and being 3rd ranked is 0 points. Being the #1 launcher within the group earns the player 6 points, 2nd within the group is worth 4 points, and 3rd in group is 3 points. Match + group points are total to determine the players who will advance to the next round.

Day 3: One player from each faction from within each group will move on, based on highest total points for that round. The next round proceeds much as the previous with the exception that we have reduced the amount of players from 243 to 81, the number of matches from 81 to 27, and the number of groups from 27 to 9.

Day 4: Again this round proceeds much like the previous rounds only now the bracket is reduced to 27 players in 9 matches and 3 groups.

Day 5: This is the semi-final round with a single group, 3 matches, and 9 players. The top scoring player from each faction from this round will proceed to the final round.

Finale: The final championship round is just a single match between 1 player from each faction. Depending on the exact amount of days this Atlantis it will either be a culmination of the final day (if Atlantis is 6 days), a two day launch off (if Atlantis is 7 days), or it will go on and encompass these three players launch stats for the entire April Atlantis (if Atlantis is only 5 days).

Champion: Last years tournament launch champion was pepowy who is sadly currently showing a status of retired. At this time I’m uncertain if there will be prizes for the winner. Last year Silver awarded credits, but I think it may be an interesting option if players from within the faction agreed to purchase cubes for the winner should their faction prevail. I’ll discuss this with Legion, and encourage the other factions to consider it as well.

This was very complicated last year, but immensely fun. I can't wait to see it play out this year. All the hard work you do, Jbo and the team, is highly appreciated.

Thanks for organizing this JBo. It is nice to see players putting their own spin on Atlantis.

And just like that we have our final matchup set and underway. PolarBear from Legion vs. Soupist from Swarm vs. BigDaddyChuck from Faceless. Good luck gentlemen. Launch away! (I know you will)

March Madlantis tournament is over. PolarBear of the Legion is this years champion. Congrats.

Also there’s a faction/team scoring aspect to the tournament that Legion won over Faceless and Swarm with 2253, 1074, and 750 points respectively. Go Legion.

Finally Legion completed the trifecta to win the actual Atlantis competition (barely). This marks the 6th Atlantis victory in a row so some extra credits for us thanks to the modifications Silver just made.

Most likely next March, assuming we still have society, servers, and such at that time.
